Vermont Capitol Building Vermont hosts an emerging biotechnology and life science industry. The Green Mountain State shows promise for growth in the sector, with such assets as an entrepreneurial climate, solid academic institutions, and a high technology base.

Vermont hosts a growing number of biotechnology and life science corporations. Notable examples include Analytical Services in Williston; BioMosaics in Burlington; Dairy Association Company Inc. in Lyndon; Green Mountain Antibodies Inc. in Burlington; Haematologic Technologies, Inc. in Essex Junction; and Safe Life Corporation in Williston.

As the state’s premier academic research institution, the University of Vermont (UVM) in Burlington offers a wealth of research centers and expertise, such as the Cardiovascular Research Institute at Fletcher Allen; the Neuroscience Center of Biomedical Research Excellence; the Vermont Lung Center; and the Entomology Research Laboratory, to name a few. UVM also offers the services of its Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) for intellectual property and technology transfer activity. Additionally, the Vermont Cancer Center (VCC) conducts much of its research at UVM. The VCC is designated as a "Comprehensive Cancer Center" by the National Cancer Institute and serves the Vermont and northern New York communities with clinical research, cancer prevention, and treatment.

Vermont’s biotechnology and life sciences center remains an evolving field, and awaits the benefit of organizations and incubators designed to foster its growth. The Vermont Department of Economic Development represents an important resource to doing business in the Green Mountain State. The department emphasizes the support and creation of quality jobs to improve the state’s economy as well as the lives of all Vermonters. Vermont’s biotechnology and life science industry resources, combined with the state’s entrepreneurial spirit, promise continued growth in the sector.
